About
Keystone Heights

Keystone Heights, Florida, was founded in the early 20th century by John J. Lawrence and his brothers, Jess and Claude, who established the Lawrence Developing Company in 1919. Their goal was to transform the small railroad stop of Brooklyn, located along the Georgia Southern and Florida railroad line that ran between Valdosta, Georgia, and Palatka, Florida, into a scenic lakeside resort. An important step in developing Keystone Heights as a distinct community was the relocation of the railroad depot and post office from Brooklyn to the newly planned community, less than a mile east.

In 1923, Ray C. Jenkins conducted a survey of the town, and Max McCullough drew up the first plat. As interest in Keystone Heights grew, Ray Lawrence expanded the plat in 1924, doubling the town’s size. Keystone Heights was officially incorporated as a city in 1925.

A key feature of the community was the Keystone Inn, completed in 1923. Overlooking Lake Geneva, this three-story, 38-room hotel quickly became the town’s social and cultural hub after its grand opening on January 1, 1924. The inn hosted numerous events and gatherings, establishing Keystone Heights as a community destination with a vibrant social scene.

In December 1923, John and Agnes Lawrence sold their interest in the Lawrence Developing Company to Senator Frank P. Miller, who took over as president and continued to promote Keystone Heights as both a residential and resort community.

In 1927, Keystone Heights achieved a new level of recognition when it was selected as the permanent winter assembly location for the Florida Chautauqua, a movement focused on adult education and cultural enrichment. The first session, from February 6 to March 27, attracted numerous visitors, enhancing the town’s reputation as a center for cultural and intellectual pursuits.

The establishment of Camp Blanding nearby in 1940 brought a significant economic boost to Keystone Heights during World War II. Military personnel and their families often stayed at the Keystone Inn, supporting local businesses and bringing new life to the community.

Although initially envisioned as a winter retreat, Keystone Heights quickly grew into a year-round destination due to its lakes, which offered fishing, hunting, and water sports. This recreational appeal attracted residents and visitors throughout the year, adding to the town’s charm and vitality.

The Keystone Inn remained a central feature of the town until a fire in 1954 led to its closure. In 1999, the city purchased the property, and in 2000, it was transformed into a community park.

Today, Keystone Heights reflects the legacy of its founders, offering natural beauty, cultural history, and a welcoming community spirit. The town’s rich heritage and lakeside appeal continue to attract residents and visitors, preserving the vision of its early development.
